Things to do in Alnmouth
Historically, Alnmouth was a port village with regular trade from the north, south, and along the coast. A severe storm in 1806 and the arrival of the railways in the mid-19th century changed this, and tourism became a more popular industry. The Victorian tourists brought with them some of the first holiday camps and beach huts in the country.
If you want to travel like the Victorians, the Aln Valley Railway Project preserves and restores the heritage train lines. Here you can purchase tickets to board and ride on an authentic Victorian steam train.
It’s easy to see why Alnmouth became a popular seaside destination. The village is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Northumberland coastline and is surrounded by excellent beaches. A 2020 Conde Nast Travel Guide rated the village as one of the most beautiful in the UK and Ireland.
The local beaches have also become popular with water sports. You can join in with the local surfers and kite surfers when the conditions are just right or have a go at sea fishing. If you prefer land sports, Alnmouth Golf Club is the 4th oldest golf course in England.
In nearby Alnwick, you can visit Alnwick Castle which was built in 1309 and is regularly used as a film set. You might recognise it from one of the Harry Potter or Transformers movies. Alnwick Garden on Greenwell Road is also worth considering for a day out. As well as the gardens, there are walks, ponds, adventure golf, a treehouse and a bakery; you will find something for the whole family! Other nearby attractions include the Alnwick Playhouse and the Baliffgate Museum and Gallery both of which are the perfect way to round off your trip to Alnmouth.
Book your trip to Alnmouth today with one of CrossCountry’s ticket options, and see what else there is to discover.
