About the station
Teignmouth Railway Station serves the Devonshire town of Teignmouth on the south coast and lies on the north bank of the River Teign. The station was opened in May 1846 by the South Devon Railway Company. At this time it was the terminus of the line from Exeter, but by December, of the same year, the extension of the line to Newton Abbot was completed.
In 1892, a modernisation project saw the installation of a standard gauge line and a rebuilt station.
Teignmouth Station provides self-service ticket machines and has an induction loop fitted to assist the hearing-impaired. The ticket machines are accessible, as is the ticket counter, and ramps are available to help with train access. National Key toilets and customer help points are available as are wheelchair and dedicated disabled parking set-down and pick-up points.
Other station facilities include toilets and refreshments, baby changing facilities, and a lost property area. The station car park has spaces for 80 cars with 2 accessible spaces, bicycle storage for 12 bikes, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The storage area is sheltered and protected by CCTV.
Teignmouth Railway Station is served by several bus routes so continuing your journey via public transport is easy. You can find onward travel information from Teignmouth here. The station also has a taxi rank.
CrossCountry serves popular routes such as Torquay to Teignmouth, Newton Abbot to Teignmouth, Bristol to Teignmouth and Exeter to Teignmouth. For more information about how CrossCountry can help please see our priority seating and travel assistance options for your journey.
Things to do in Teignmouth
Teignmouth has been a popular seaside destination since Victorian times. The pier dates back to 1865 and is one of the very few original piers still being used. Victorian tourists also installed the Lido on Eastcliff Walk.
The Lido sits on the route of the South West Coast path, a 630-mile trail which you can walk from Poole Harbour in Dorset to Minehead in Somerset; if you have the stamina. If you prefer your exercise sitting down, then you might be interested to learn that the River Teign Rowing Club is the largest of its kind in the country. They regularly race on the river and sea and host ‘novice nights’ for those new to the sport.
More local flavours can be found in the bi-annual Teign Maritime Shanty Festival. The festival saw 44 groups performing historical working songs, and previous festivals have included themed presentations and exhibitions.
You can learn more about the local history of the town at the Teign Heritage Centre on French Street, only a one-minute walk from the station. The centre includes a restored Victorian bathing machine and old slot machines, as well as an archive of nautical history. You can even hold an old cannonball.
You will have worked up an appetite with all of that sightseeing, so the perfect follow-up would be the Teign Food & Drink Trail. This self-guided tour introduces you to fruit picking, craft beer, seasonal vegetables from the Luscombe Farm Shop and local seafood served from cafes and restaurants in the town.
There’s plenty more to see and do in and around this seaside town, so book your trip to Teignmouth today with one of CrossCountry’s ticket options, and see what else there is to discover.
