Colleagues from Network Rail and Avanti West Coast joined CrossCountry at the small Staffordshire village of Hixon recently to help out at the memorial garden.

Weeding, bulb planting and cementing in a paved border were just some of the jobs carried out by around 15 volunteers, including a few from the local community.

The volunteer day is part of an ongoing relationship with the village following the naming of a CrossCountry voyager train to commemorate the tragic road and rail accident of 1968.

West Midlands and North West Regional Director, John Robson said: “It was a really successful day and great to see the industry come together on this special project already building on the work completed by locals.

"Scott Turner, CrossCountry Track Access Specialist said: “A great day was had by all with hard work and a few laughs along the way. I’m looking forward to helping further and seeing the fruits of our labour next spring.”

Next year the project will be replacing and unveiling a custom designed window for the church which overlooks the garden. This has been jointly funded by CrossCountry, Network Rail, Avanti West Coast and North Staffs CRP as well as contributions from individuals at ASLEF branches, welfare societies and union representatives.
