About the station
Aberdeen railway station has been serving the Scottish railways for over 150 years, with some significant reconstruction and reorganisation in the meantime. The original Aberdeen Joint Station was built in 1867, but the building we see today completed construction in 1916 on the same site. Although Aberdeen Joint Station was not the primary railway terminus in Aberdeen when it was first built, it has become the busiest Scottish station north of Glasgow and Edinburgh; and the name was formally changed to Aberdeen railway station in 1952.
Located in the centre of Aberdeen city, the station is ideally placed to bring commuters, tourists, and visitors into the heart of Aberdeen with onward transport links available. Now serving CrossCountry trains, LNER, ScotRail and the Caledonian Sleeper; Aberdeen has become an ultra-connected station in Scotland to make holidays in the highlands or shopping days especially easy – wherever you’re travelling from.
Aberdeen station serves a large variety of railway routes from all over the UK, making it the perfect destination for a Scottish staycation or an ideal starting point for journeys both north and south. Popular routes include Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Aberdeen to Plymouth, and Aberdeen to Birmingham New Street.
Things to do in Aberdeen
Aberdeen is one of the UK’s greatest cities not least thanks to its unique combination of cityscape and seaside charm. With historic granite buildings lining the streets, this is the perfect place to wander through a huge variety of shops, boutiques, markets, and cafes for a relaxed weekend outing.
Aberdeen is truly second to none when it comes to high-end shopping. From designer outlets and high-street favourites to one-of-a-kind vintage spots. Aberdeen’s shopping districts are the best place to find that perfect piece that your wardrobe is missing. If you prefer traditional food shopping in independent artisan stores, Rosemount has all manner of cheese shops, butchers, fishmongers, and more. Find everything you need (and more!) in Aberdeen’s unique shops and stores.
With its wonderful blend of city and seaside, there is a culture in Aberdeen that you won’t find elsewhere. The city harbour is home to dolphins, and you can dig into this marine culture by visiting the Aberdeen Maritime Museum. The harbour and coastal landscape are key to the beauty of Aberdeen, so be sure to indulge in an ice cream or two on your visit! If the weather isn’t on your side, why not shelter from the storm in the Belmont Filmhouse, where they show a wide selection of old and new flicks.
Whether you spend your days outside by the harbour, inside a cinema, or in and out of boutiques, Aberdeen has something special for everyone. Read more about things to do in Aberdeen when travelling with CrossCountry.
