About the station
Banbury Train Station opened in 1839 by the London and Southampton Railway. The station saw competition in the 1900s from Winchester (Chesil), but today it is the only station serving the city. The development of the railway expanded opportunities for trade and travel; well beyond those provided by the canals which had been built in the previous century.
Today, Banbury Train Station continues to serve this market town. Popular routes include Bournemouth to Banbury, Birmingham to Banbury and Manchester to Banbury.
Things to do in Banbury
Banbury is known to have been part of Roman Britain, but in 2002 Iron Age relics were found in Hennef Way, dating back as far as 200 BC. Anglo-Saxon development thrived in the centuries that followed. It was in the 6th century that a settlement was founded where the present town stands today.
Banbury Castle was built in the 12th century and remained in use as late as the English Civil War (1642-1651). The castle was destroyed in 1648 and all that remains today is Castle Street which leads to the Castle Quay Shopping Centre. Castle Quay is home to eighty popular high-street stores including independent retailers.
Although Banbury Castle is no longer standing, you can still learn about the rich local history of Banbury at the Banbury Museum. Learn how Oliver Cromwell plotted the Battle of Edge Hill in 1642; or visit the Globe Room in the Reine Deer Inn and stand where Oliver Cromwell stood as he made his plans.
You can also visit Lock 29, which is described as ”a sustainable community destination in the heart of Banbury. Lock 29 features artisanal food, pop-up entertainment, and a space for community activities. Castle Quay Waterfront is another recent development which opened in 2022 and offers canal-side retail and entertainment.
When you visit Banbury, you have to take advantage of the beautiful English countryside. Explore the area by bike, enjoy a relaxing trip on one of the 18th century canals, or take a tour of the nearby Cotswolds by coach.
While Banbury has plenty to offer the hungry visitor, not every town can lay claim to the creation of a pastry treat, so make sure you enjoy an authentic and locally made Banbury Cake while you are here.
To entertain the kids why not visit the Waterfowl Sanctuary and Children’s Farm for some outdoor fun, or the Rugrats and Half Pints play area to entertain the kids for hours.
This market town sits amongst some of the most beautiful English countryside and blends history with the modern world. Banbury is within easy reach of many towns and cities around the country, so book your ticket today with CrossCountry Trains.
