About the station

Oakham train station has been serving the Rutland town of Oakham since it first opened in 1848. The station sits around halfway between the prominent train stations of Leicester and Peterborough and is unique in being the only surviving passenger railway station in Rutland.

Oakham train station opened in 1848 as part of the Midland Railway, with a station building designed by Edward Wood. This building still stands today and is now Grade II listed and gives the station a distinctively historic atmosphere.

Refurbishment work began in October 2020 to update the station, wherein the footbridge was refurbished and repainted. The upgraded bridge opened to the public in April 2021. Similarly to the station building, the signal box, footbridge, and level crossing on site at Oakham are also listed buildings. The signal box is such an iconic example of a British railway signal box that it was used as the inspiration for the Airfix kit of a signal box.

You can reach Oakham from a wide range of locations across the UK, with trains operated by East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry. Popular routes on CrossCountry trains include Peterborough to Oakham, Leicester to Oakham, Stansted Airport to Oakham, and Birmingham to Oakham.

At Oakham train station, facilities include a ticket office, bicycle parking, and a car park which is open 24 hours a day Monday-Friday.
