About the station
Built in 1850, Peterborough station was not the original station in the city. Peterborough East (1845-1966) and the shorter-lived Peterborough Crescent (1858-1866) were built before Peterborough station, but it’s now the only serving station in the city. After the construction of the station, Peterborough was revolutionised from being a small market town into an industrial hub. CrossCountry services from Peterborough across the UK, with popular routes including Peterborough to Cambridge, Peterborough to Birmingham, and Leicester to Peterborough.
Things to do in Peterborough
With a laidback, rural atmosphere mixed with bustling modernity, Peterborough is often overlooked for British holiday destinations. However, it’s a fantastic place to visit for family trips, a couples’ retreat, or even business trips. Being the largest city in Cambridgeshire, there’s plenty to do for people of all interests, so catching a train to Peterborough is always a safe bet.
A city with a rich heritage, Peterborough is proud of its culture and history – and rightly so. If you’re strolling around, you’ll undoubtedly notice much of the historic architecture, but we recommend visiting the grand cathedral. To find out more about the city’s great past, pay a visit to the Peterborough Museum, which runs exhibitions throughout the year that are interesting for adults and engaging for the kids. Another great place to visit is Ferry Meadows – home to the Nene Valley Railway – if you are with the family.
If it’s shopping you’re after, Peterborough has tonnes to offer. Queensgate shopping centre is right on the train station’s doorstep and has more than 90 shops under one roof, so it’s great for all your shopping needs. Queensgate not only has high street brands but also offers a diverse range of vintage and charity stores. For more local options, discover the Westgate Arcade and Peterborough City Market , and meander through the independent boutiques, handmade crafts, or local producers.
After a heavy day of sightseeing and shopping, a nice meal and drink will be a great way to cap off your day. With a special focus on local produce, a vast range of independent cafes and restaurants, and an array of high street classics, you certainly won’t be short of options in Peterborough. To have a meal to remember, walk through the historic doors of The Queens Head, or step on-board the quirky floating Peking Barge. To grab an excellent cup of coffee to get the day started or to take a rest, there’s a bustling café culture all over the city, ranging from retro to ultra-modern. You won’t be short of options here.
