About the station
Originally built in 1840 as a stop along the London to Bristol route, recent expansion has seen Reading Station become to second-largest interchange outside of London. Around 20 million passengers use the station daily, so modern facilities have been built to keep up with demand. An internationally renowned music festival and its proximity to London make it one of the more favoured train stations in the UK.
CrossCountry serves some of the most popular routes in and out of Reading, including Reading to Manchester, Reading to Birmingham, and Manchester to Reading.
Things to do in Reading
There’s no doubt Reading is best known for its eponymous music festival, but this large town has so much more to offer than just rock bands and smelly tents. With a bustling scene of museums, shopping, arts, culture and more, you’ll find no shortage of things to do when you visit.
Look no further than Reading Museum for your dose of local history. It contains artefacts and objects that tell the tale of the town’s past, as well as an extensive collection of archaeological finds from Roman Silchester. Its compact nature means Reading is an easy town to shop in. Two shopping centres are within walking distance of each other, so you can quickly shift from the high-end Oracle to the high-street favourites of Broad Street Mall. Harris Arcade is the best place to find quirky boutiques and independent stores, while Reading Collector’s Centre is home to an array of vintage and antique shops.
Reading is a multi-cultural town – something that’s reflected in its culinary scene.
